Edinburgh Science is a fantastic charity, helping educate children in the importance of STEM and how their school subjects are applied in everyday life.
Their events are highly engaging and educational, so we were absolutely delighted to get involved and apply our expertise to help engage with the mathematicians, scientists and engineers of tomorrow.
With Scotland’s space industry rapidly growing, we wanted to spark kids’ interest in this sector, challenge their abilities to understand and prioritise components, whilst bringing their attention to some of the challenges our typical space industry workers experience.
Team R3PD designed and produced an educational Cube Satellite, which were accompanied by a range of artificial switchboards, which would have different functions.
Depending on the purpose of the satellite, kids would have to configure the satellite correctly and only use the components required, otherwise the satellites may be overweight and would therefore be ineligible for launch.
The educational satellites were designed from scratch and produced using 3D printing for the main frame and laser cutting was used for the accurate cutting and shaping of the internal components. The products were built in such a way to be durable but most importantly, very interactive.
Our team fast-tracked the development journey for this product by designing the product digitally, communicating our final design with our client using rendered images and testing the product artificially, using FEA, before physically producing a high volume of units.
Since Edinburgh Science introduced our Cube Satellite, it has been used at various events throughout the UK and also as far afield as Dubai. Much like a real satellite, our Cube Satellite seems to travel very well.
